Applied semantics and climate communication

چکیده
Abstract This paper explores ways in which applied semantics (coming out of Natural Semantic Metalanguage approach) can inform effective communicative strategies for action on climate change. After framing discussion, it presents three case studies, are intentionally disparate nature: contrastive the expressions ‘climate crisis’, emergency’, and catastrophe’; a semantically-enhanced examination how public inquiries into extreme weather events help shape discourse Australia; ‘the economy’ everyday English implications change discourse. We argue that communication is clearer, more resonant, when uses or builds ordinary words local meanings.

Software for Applied Semantics*
This paper recommends an approach to the implementation of semantic representation languages (SRLs) which exploits a parallelism between SRLs and programming languages (PLs). The design requirements of SRLs for natural language are similar to those of PLs in their goals. First, in both cases we seek modules in which both the surface representation (print form) and the underlying data structures...
متن کاملAn applied radical semantics
The difficulties encountered in the field of machine translation are many. The areas of contact between meaning and the syntactic vehicle expressing it are refractory and pose a problem for linguistic computational research. An applied radical semantics offers some operational solutions for ambiguous syntactic situations. Subject identification within a two-place predicate structure is presente...
متن کاملApplied Semantics for Integration and Analytics
There are two major trends of industrial application for semantic technologies: integration and analytics. The integration potential of semantics was the first one which came to industrial implementation, particularly due to adoption of semantic platform by ISO 15926 standard. But there are certain problems in practical use of this standard, so integration is often built without using it. We wi...
متن کاملApplied and implied semantics in crystallographic publishing
UNLABELLED BACKGROUND Crystallography is a data-rich, software-intensive scientific discipline with a community that has undertaken direct responsibility for publishing its own scientific journals. That community has worked actively to develop information exchange standards allowing readers of structure reports to access directly, and interact with, the scientific content of the articles. ...
